Among other things, the Altoona Machine Shops produced 2,289 steam locomotives and tenders in the 38 years from the time it first opened in December of 1866 until it ceased production in January of 1904. The Civil War-era, wrought-iron, 12th Street Footbridge was replaced in December of 1965! The artist's name is not recorded.

Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "South Altoona Shops, Altoona, Pa." No Postmark. Among other things, the Brass Foundry situated here produced all of the PRR's brass friction bearings and locomotive bells. In later years, a coal-fired electric power plant was built here; it supplied the electricity for all of the Altoona Works. That's the Sixth Avenue Road in the foreground, not visible behind the Shop buildings is the branch line between Hollidaysburg (to the left) and Altoona (to the right), while the imposing Allegheny Mountains are barely visible in the distance. Partial Caption: "PRR didn't like USRA Light Mikados, and that was that. Assigned a batch during World War I, she disposed of all save five and kept those five near Cincinnati. This is L-2s 9631 at Cincinnati in 1938. Built by Alco-Schenectady in [March of] 1919, the 9631 lasted until [August of] 1948. She actually started as GR&I 112, and picked up the number 9631 in 1921."

Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "Main Line Of Commerce." Composed by Mr. Grif Teller. No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "The location of this autumn scene is about six miles west of Johnstown, Pa. In the foreground the Pennsylvania Railroad's main line tracks between East and West parallel the scenic Conemaugh River, and on the far side are tracks of the Sang Hollow Extension Branch." Depicted in the center (L to R) are PRR diesel engine #5843 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are EP-20's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #5843 was constructed in August of 1947. Depicted at the right is PRR engine #6444, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during November of 1943 and retired in February of 1960. [Loco Count: Steamers 2, Diesels 1]

Shown here are four Pennsylvania Railroad GG-1 (2-C-C-2) electric locomotives, all rated at 4,620 horsepower. Second from the left ~ painted tuscan red and producing all of that steam ~ is #4909, built in Juniata during December of 1941. Unfortunately, the road numbers of the other three GG-1's are not recorded.

Description:  Here is a postal card entitled "Rockville Bridge." Postmarked: 17 June 1954. Caption On Reverse: "The largest stone arch bridge in the world, it is 3,810 feet long, has 48 spans, and carries four tracks of the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was completed in 1902 at a cost of $975,000. There are 440,000,000 pounds of stone in this powerful viaduct, which is 52 feet wide over the Susquehanna River. Location of the Bridge is approximately four miles north of [Harrisburg] and the main highway passes beneath it. Kodachrome by Ernest Bostelman." In this context, the River flows from right to left on its merry way to Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

A century of expansion and redevelopment is symbolized in the city's Golden Triangle, its gleaming skyline dominated by newly-constructed buildings. For the P.R.R., this 100 years is highlighted by a billion-dollar improvement, modernization, and rehabilitation program, nearing completion, which will provide passengers and shippers with the finest transportation service in P.R.R. history." Description:  Here is a postal card that could be entitled "Action At Paxinos." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "Turn the calendar back to November 8, 1954, go down the riverbank and watch Pennsy's train S-390 go by. Behind Baldwin-built Decapod 4644 are 119 cars and two more Decapods, numbers 4629 and 4639, pushing on the rear. Typical Pennsy action at Paxinos, Pa. Photos by Robert M. Malinowski." All three locomotives were produced by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapods" in October of 1923. #4644 was rebuilt as an I-1SA in January of 1943 and retired in February of 1960. #4629 was rebuilt as an I-1SA in August of 1935 and retired in January of 1956. And #4639 was rebuilt as an I-1SA in December of 1938 and retired in February of 1956. The road number of the N-5 cabin car is not recorded.
