In the mid 2010s, Metrolink took delivery of newer equipment, and the Bombardier cars were placed in storage as surplus. In 2014, due to increasing ridership. Caltrains board approved $4 million to purchase 16 of the surplus cars, and they entered service in 2015. They differ from the Caltrain cars as they have riveted sides instead of the welded sides of the newer Caltrain bi-levels.
