Norfolk Southern 5295 backs across St. Claude Avenue in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. After another half mile, the engine will reach its destination, a small transloading facility on the Mississippi River. 5295 was built in 1973 as a GP38-2 for Penn Central as their 8100 (Note the box on the walkway denoting PRR-style cab signals). In 1976, Conrail took ownership of PC, and 8100 kept its number for another 24 years until the NS takeover, when it recieved the number 5295. As of June, 2021, 5295 was off NS roster with an unknown fate. |
