As a thick fog rolls in from the west, NJ Transit ALP-45DP No. 4521 leads North Jersey Coast Line train 3326 over the Raritan River Drawbridge at Perth Amboy, NJ. Built in 1908 by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Raritan River Drawbridge, "River Draw", is the sole rail link for 17 of the 20 rail stations on NJ Transits North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL) and spans the distance between Perth Amboy and South Amboy, NJ about a half a mile from where the Raritan River meets the Atlantic Ocean, carrying almost 10,000 NJ Transit costumers a day. A new bridge will soon be built to replace the existing swing bridge, which suffered severe damage during hurricane Sandy. |
