UP 21 seat lunch counter-16 seat diner #4003 (AC&F, 1955, Lot #3813). Rebuilt in 1960 to 16 seat lounge-cafeteria, sold in 1974 to Amtrak and reconfigured to 16 seat diner-cafeteria as #8399, retired in 1981 and sold to an "R. Hayes" in Barstow, later resold to Northern Rail Car in Cudahy, WI, and rebuilt to a kitchen car as NRCX #800559, leased to Scenic Rail Dining Tours, then resold to Transcisco Tours as the PINE RIVER, repossessed by Northern Rail Car after Transcisco bankruptcy, then resold in 1993 to UP as UPP #4003/#800559 PACIFIC LIMITED. Scanned with an Epson V550 from an original Kodachrome 35mm slide. |

Description: |
Amtrak cafeteria-diner 8399 was originally Union Pacific lunch counter-dining car 4003, one of four such cars (4000-4003) built under ACF Lot 3813 in 1955 with a 21-seat lunch counter and four 4-seat tables. In 1960 the 4001-4003 were remodeled with a cafeteria counter and a 16-seat lounge for service on the CITY OF ST. LOUIS. The 4001 was sold to the Alaska Railroad in 1971, while the 4002 and 4003 went to Amtrak in 1974 and were remodeled into cafeteria-diners 8398 and 8399. (approximate month) |
