Here is a postal card entitled "Horse Shoe Curve on P. & N.W.R.R., Altoona, Pa." No Postmark. The artist is not identified. Caption On Reverse: "Horse-Shoe Curve on P. & N. W. R. R., Altoona, Pa. ~ The city of Altoona is located at the east base of the Allegheny Mountains at an elevation of 1,180 feet above sea level, where the railroad begins to ascend the mountains at a grade of 90 feet to the mile. Horse-Shoe Curve is the most picturesque spot in the Alleghenies, and is located about a mile from Altoona. Population about 55,000." Note that there are only two tracks present in this depiction; the third and fourth tracks were added in 1898 and 1900 respectively. |

Here is an aerial photo from the Culver Service. It was published originally in the January 1948 issue of "Railroad" magazine, page 9. Photo Caption: "Hell Gate, entrance to New York City, as viewed from the air over Long Island Sound. Next to the Bayonne Bridge, this two-hinged steel arch is the longest span of its kind in the world." The tracks to New York City and points South are to the left of the span, while those to New Haven and points North curve toward the photo's bottom. The open spaces on the opposite shore are now filled with houses and apartment buildings, while a sewage processing plant now occupies the open space near the curved right-of-way. |

A CN container train has halted at Van Dyne Rd. on the former C&NW main line at Van Dyne, WI on 1 Sep. '17. The train was waiting to enter North Fond du Lac. Things were unusually backed up at North Fond du Lac for some reason. There is another southbound container train (the train in the previous photograph) behind me as well as another train on the former SOO main line just out of frame to the right. |
