CRI&P E3A 625 |
Description: |
CRI&P E3A 625 at the Rocket House, 47th Street, Chicago, Illinois, June 13, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built by EMC in July 1939 (c/n 934) on Order E245A for two E3A's, (625 and 626), both traded to EMD in September 1969. They were built for the Fall 1939 inaguration of the new lightweight Rocky Mountain Rocket, replacing the steam powered Rocky Mountain Limited. The original trainset was a partially articulated Budd built three car trainset pulled by a EMC TA model locomotive, expanded to a seven car Budd-Pullman built mix (November 12, 1939), requiring more horsepower, thus the two E3's. Note the taper at the rear of the carbody to match the roofline of the Budd cars. |

CRI&P E3A 625 |
Description: |
CRI&P E3A 625 at the 47th Street coach yard, Chicago, Illinois, June 13, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built by EMC in July 1939 (c/n 934), on EMC Order E245A for two E3A's (625 and 626). These two E3's were intended for the new Rocky Mountain Rocket. Only 17 E3A's were built, and only two E3B's. Rock Island's units survived until traded to EMD in September 1969. There's a nice as-built image at the RITS web site: http://www.rits.org/www/equipment/dieselpix/rmr.gif |

EMC E3 #822 - ElectroMotive Corp Demonstrator |
Description: |
Original photo of ElectroMotive Corp E3 #822 which had been built and just released from the LaGrange plant 12 days earlier. The demonstrator must have been on its maiden trip when this was snapped by an unknown photographer. The photogrpaher listed it as an 1800hp unit but Wikipedia rates it at 2000hp. A total of 17 were produced between September 12, 1938 to June of 1940. The 2,000 hp (1,500 kW) was achieved by putting two 1,000 horsepower (750 kW), 12-cylinder, model 567 engines in the engine compartment. Each engine drove its own electrical generator to power the traction motors. The E3 was the fourth model in a long line of passenger diesels of similar design known as EMD E-units. This unit was finally sold to Kansas City Southern as their #1. Unknown photographer. |

FEC E3A #1002 - Florida East Coast |
Description: |
A couple of admiring visitors view the new pair of 2000 hp E3A's built in 1939. According to Railwayclassics.com, "The inauguration of the Henry M. Flagler and The Champion in December of 1939 is frequently recognized as the beginning of dieselization on the Florida East Coast. Power chosen for each of the six car trains was EMC's early, slant-nose 2000 horsepower E3 units, numbered 1001 and 1002." The photo of the two E3A's - 1001 labeled "Henry M. Flagler and 1002 labeled "The Champion" - was taken by an unknown photographer. |
