Description:  Bayview Jct was a great place to watch trains, but sometimes you were just in the wrong place. This CN freight snuck up on me, and I was not able to get away from the trees. The second unit is one of the 4000 series GP40's geared for passenger speeds. These units could usually be found on VIA trains in that era.

Title:  Auto-Train 4010 on eastbound L&N freight
Description:  In 1973 the L&N rented a handful of U36Bs from Auto-Train, GP40s from CN, and other locomotives from whomever had excess power. The power shortage was caused by the boom in eastern Kentucky coal traffic. As a result, diesels from A-T, CN, PC, SP and other RRs were seen in places those RRs were seldom, if ever, seen before.

Description:  At 2:45 p.m. this northbound Louisville & Nashville train was waiting to depart from the railroad's GENTILLY YARD in New Orleans with four locomotives from three different railroads in four different paint schemes! It had Canadian National GP 40 4015 and Auto-Train U36B 4010, both on lease, as well as L&N GP30 1009 in an obsolete L&N scheme and L&N U28Bm 2501 in the then-current FAMILY LINES scheme.

Title:  Caught off guard
Description:  Bayview is one of the great places to watch trains in North America, but you can get surprised if youre not watching. This westbound for Toronto caught me off guard, coming around the curve while I was looking elsewhere. I was able to react fast enough to catch the power, a CN Alco, and one of the small number of CN GP 40s that were geared for passenger trains. VIA had not fully established their fleet yet, and CN power was common on trains in those days.
