Description:  At Tucumcari, New Mexico, midwestern grainger railroad Rock Island interchanged with the Southern Pacific Railroad. Having just swapped power in Tucumcari, this freight is now a Rock Island train, and it departs town behind an anonymous GP35, U33B 287, U28B 276, U33B 294 and U28B 273. This train will head northeast and pass through Dalhart, Texas, a sliver of the Oklahoma panhandle, and Liberal, Kansas on its way to Kansas City on March 26th, 1973.

Description:  Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad U25B 225 and U33B 296 at La Salle, Illinois on June 24, 1973, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 225 is a U25B, built in September 1965 (c/n 35701), and is equipped with frog eye headlights on the corners of the cab roof, an early form of ditch lights. The trailing unit is 296, a U33B built around September 1968 (c/n 36828). The occasion is a fan trip powered by Southern Railway's 2-8-2 4501, which is waiting for this train to clear so it can be wyed for the return trip to Chicago.
