Title:
CO 4-8-4 #601 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:
Fairly nice photo by Otto C. Perry of the Lima 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotive although the C&O referred to them as "Greenbriers". The unit was delivered in December of 1935. Seen here a year after delivery, it still has its shiny boiler shell and clean white wall rims. The locos in the class were given patriotic names - this one was "Patrick Henry". The J-3 class was retired in 1953.

CO 4-6-0 #129 - Cheaspeake & Ohio
Description:
Built by the Rogers Locomotive Works of Paterson, NJ, in 1889, this 4-6-0 ten wheeler served the C&O for about 35 years before the class was scrapped in 1924. According to an early Railroad & Engineering Journal "noted that these were passenger Ten-wheelers intended for heavy grades. The "vestibule" train for which it was expressly designed had nine cars and was to be moved over the section at an average of 32 mph." Specs - F-9 class, 62" drivers, 170 psi boiler pressure, 20x24" cylinders, engine weight of 137,200 lb, tractive effort of 22,374 lb. No exact date other than circa 1900, no location and no photographer were given for the photo.

CO 4-8-2 #549 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:
The Alco-Richmond factory shina and white walls still gleams in this photo. Built in 1923, it originally was numbered 139 but a year later renumbered to 540. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo but it appears to be very early in its service, hence the arbitrary date set in 1924. The J-2 class was eventually retired in 1951-52.

C&O 2-10-4 #3035 - Chesapeake & Ohio RR
Description:
Nice looking 1930 Lima built Texas type 2-10-4 locomotive sitting in the Russell, KY, yard approximately a year after being delivered for heavy service between Russell, KY, and Toledo, OH. According to www.steamlocomotive. com "The Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad designed a new Class of freight locomotive to satisfy its needs for motive power. They tested an Erie Berkshire then basically stretched the Erie design adding one set of drivers, creating a 2-10-4 that was both powerful and fast. The C&O ordered forty of it new design "Texas" type locomotives from the Lima Locomotive Works in 1930. These locomotives were designated as Class T-1 and were assigned road number 3000 through number 3039. They had 69" diameter drivers, 29" x 34" cylinders, a 265 psi boiler pressure, exerted 93,345 pounds of tractive effort and each weighed 566,000 pounds. The locomotives were equipped with a trailing truck booster that exerted 15,275 pounds of tractive effort. This basic design was used for most 2-10-4s constructed after 1930." R.W. Legg photo

Built by Alco-Schenectady in 1903, this 4-4-2 "Atlantic type" locomotive was one of only 20 that were on the C&O roster but they did hold on for decades with thirteen of them remaining in use until 1949. This one is caught in my Hoosier state servicing Richmond, IN. Specs - class A-16, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 22x26" cylinders, engine weight of 173,000 lb and tractive effort of 27,073. CO 4-8-4 #600 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:
Looking very much like a builder's photo, this beautifully detailed scale model is based on the actual Lima built 4-8-4, called a "Greenbrier" rather than the traditional "Northern-type" locomotive, which was delivered to the C&O in 1935. These were among the largest 4-8-4s built. #600 is name "The George Washington" for the passenger train these locos would head up. This particular loco was named the "Thomas Jefferson".

C&O 4-8-4 #603 - Chesapeake & Ohio RR
Description:
Nice photo of the 1935 Lima built Northern-type locomotive that the C&O called "Greenbriers", their J-3 class. The first 5 were given names - this one being labeled "Edmund Randolf" after the distinguished statesman. According to www.Steamlocomotives.com " Known as Greenbriers on the C&O, these were among the largest 4-8-4s built. According to Drury (1993), the design was based on the earlier 2-10-4. All of the engines had the same power dimensions (cylinder volume, boiler pressure setting, and driver diameter) and 14" (356 mm) piston valves. All twelve had trailing-truck boosters to raise starting tractive effort. The first two orders used Worthington Type 5-S feed water heaters." Specifics - 74" drivers, impressive 255 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 477,000 lb, tractive effort of 66,453 lb. No exact date was given for this photo so an arbitrary one was used. An unknown photographer captured this moment.

CO 2-8-8-2 #1558 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:
One of the original 25 built by Alco in 1924, this H-7 class "Chesapeake" type locomotive was able to pull 9,500 ton trains over the 113 mile run from Russell, Kentucky to Columbus, Ohio in 5 hours according to www.steamlocomotive.com. This wheel type soon replaced teh 2-10-4 and the 2-6-6-6 Alleghenies in the territory. A real power monster! Unfortunately no location, date or photographer credit was listed for this photo. Looks like West Virginia or Kentucky from the background.

CO 4-4-2 #286 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:
This 1906 Alco built "Atlantic" type locomotive rolls through Peru, Indiana on this unspecified winter day. Not one of the better designs for the mountainous part of the C&O, it must have worked well in the flatlands of Indiana. Max Miller is credited with the photo. Thirteen of the 20 locos in the group remained in use unitl 1949 - tribute to their abilities. Always like posting photos from my home state!
