Album Info:Here is a two-page camera study entitled "Pennsylvania's Turbine Engine." It was published originally in the January 1945 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 14-15. No author is specified. "The Pennsylvania Railroad has placed in experimental service on the Middle Division its new Class S-2 direct-drive steam turbine locomotive, a fundamentally new type of coal-burning motive power producing tractive effort by a steam turbine geared directly to the two center pairs of 68-inch drivers...." (Page 15) Also included are four photos of the "Steam Turbine" in action.

Description:  Turbine. Here is a photo by William B. Beamer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1944. It was published originally in David R. Sweetland's (2000) book entitled "Pennsylvania Railroad Color Pictorial: Volume One ~ Altoona To New York City," page 26. Shown here is PRR engine #6200, the S-2 (6-8-6) "Steam Turbine" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1944, rated at 6,900 horsepower, and retired in January of 1952 after barely eight years of experimental service.

Description:  Turbine. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Tom Harley that was taken in Englewood, Illinois, in November of 1946. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6200, the S-2 (6-8-6) "Steam Turbine" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1944, rated at 6,900 horsepower, and retired in January of 1952 after just eight years of revenue service. Note the "elephant ears" and the red-hot cinders under the firebox. No syncopating "chug-a-chug" . . . just a continuous, thunderous "wooosh"! (#5,185)
