Here is a photo taken by Noel Hiram Deeks. It was published originally in the December 1940 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 21. Photo Caption: "Manhattan is one of those places that 'just growed.' For years arrivals on the Pennsylvania had to cross town by taxi, on foot, or via subway to get to the New Haven trains. In 1914 construction was started to connect Sunnyside Yards, PRR coach yards on Long Island, with the main line of the New Haven in the Bronx. This involved the building of a four-track bridge costing 19 million dollars over the narrows at Hell Gate. The steel span of 977 ft. was the largest in the world when the bridge was opened to traffic in 1917. With approaches, the total length is 3-1/2 miles." Here is an aerial photo from the Culver Service. It was published originally in the January 1948 issue of "Railroad" magazine, page 9. Photo Caption: "Hell Gate, entrance to New York City, as viewed from the air over Long Island Sound. Next to the Bayonne Bridge, this two-hinged steel arch is the longest span of its kind in the world." The tracks to New York City and points South are to the left of the span, while those to New Haven and points North curve toward the photo's bottom. The open spaces on the opposite shore are now filled with houses and apartment buildings, while a sewage processing plant now occupies the open space near the curved right-of-way. |

Here is a photo that was included in a piece entitled "Famous Railway Bridges." It was published originally in the September 1948 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 33. The photographer was not identified. Photo Caption: "Graceful Hell Gate Bridge links New England and points south of New York by crossing the East River 140 feet above high-water mark. A New Haven railfan special in on the bridge, owned by the New Haven and Pennsylvania. This engineering marvel is a familiar sight in many American homes, thanks to the famous model that Lionel built for toy trains." Here is the first of two successive 35mm color slides that I took while riding in an Amtrak passenger train from New Rochelle (NY) to Washington (DC) on 26 July 1987. Shown here (Front to Rear) is some of the foliage on Ward's Island, the northern end of the Whitestone Bridge, the dog-leg entrance to the waters of Hell Gate, a tiny tip of Queens, as well as the skyline of midtown Manhattan. The ghostly forms of the World Trade Center towers are barely visible at the far left. Photo taken while crossing the Hell Gate Bridge, which was opened on 28 March 1917 ~ slightly more than 70 years earlier! |
