Title:  Walk on by
Description:  The Port Jervis scoot rolls past waiting OIBU at West OV. It was not a good afternoon to be OIBU. He got scooped at Campbell Hall by TV 301, then here by Metro North, and would get sacked again at Port Jervis by SLN 5.

Pushing down for a pick up
Title:  Pushing down for a pick up
Description:  This Hoboken bound train is pushing out of the yard at Suffern, and will shortly be doing its station work before heading for Hoboken. Even with the number in a Conrail style typeface, it's good to see a U34 in its original scheme.

The new order
Title:  The new order
Description:  Actually, several new orders. The re electrification of the ex DLW Morris & Essex was not completed til 1984, and the Arrow cars originally bought to implement the change were already old. Arrow III cars were on line by then. A set of Arrow II's stops where Edison era electrics once trod. Somehow they dont have quiet the same feel as the old cars.

New power
Title:  New power
Description:  A weekend trip to New York found me passing through Port Jervis. There I found this rebuilt GP 40 waiting for Mondays rush hour. The era of U34s was closing, and "new" power was coming on line as NJ Transit and Metro North, who funded the operation west of Suffern, upgraded their power from the hand me downs of the previous decade.

Old and new order
Title:  Old and new order
Description:  The GP 40 rebuild at left is the wave of the future, taking over from the now classic U34CH at right, in service for 17 years at this point, and reaching the end of its service life, though that design will hold on for a few more years. The old Erie coal dock is visible above the GP40, almost 40 years after the last steam ran here.

Description:  A GP 40 rebuild in the Metro North beach ball scheme sits at Port Jervis over the weekend. In the distance, the Erie Port Jervis station can be seen; at right is signal 87-2, the distant signal for BC, where the double track goes to single as the line heads out of Port Jervis toward Otisville.

U 34 weekend
Title:  U 34 weekend
Description:  A trip to NY City most times meant a ride down NY 97 from Hancock to check whatever action might show up. When we got to Port Jervis, I had to take a look around, and usually found something. This weekend it was a U 34CH with a set of Comets.

Beach ball
Title:  Beach ball
Description:  A GP 40 type sits at Port Jervis waiting out the weekend. Metro North contracted NJ Transit to operate the line from Suffern west, and contributed equipment to a pool used to run those trains. This unit in the "beach ball" schem was part of that pool.

The more things change
Title:  The more things change
Description:  The more they stay the same. This cab car was originally part of the equipment put in service with the U34s when the E 8s and Stilwell cars were retired in the early 70s. Except for the MTA markings denoting NY State ownership in place of the EL herald, not much has changed in 20 years.

Comparing notes
Title:  Comparing notes
Description:  What was it the engines said?? GP 40s from two roads share quality time waiting for Monday. The Metro North unit was new at the time, freshly rebuilt. The NJT unit was also rebuilt, having been upgraded from its original steam era configuration to HEP power, as well as renewing all components.

Now a classic
Title:  Now a classic
Description:  By the 1990s, the U34s were getting old, and NJ Transit had been taking deliveries on a variety of new and rebuilt EMDs for several years. The GEs were not long for the world. It was good to see one in an EL stronghold. I wonder if Conrail wants to borrow a couple to run DABU to Buffalo??
